4. The Name of Jesus Christ – the Name above every other name
The Bible clearly differentiates between the Person of Jesus Christ, and the Name of Jesus Christ.
We are not just called to believe in the Person of Jesus Christ, but we are also called to believe in the Name of Jesus Christ.
1 John 3:23 (NKJV) And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
The Name of Jesus Christ carries the privilege, the ability and the authority of the Person of Jesus Christ.
In rank, authority and importance, there is none higher than Jesus Christ in the whole universe.
JESUS CHRIST (PRE-INCARNATE) IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
Jesus Christ came to His people to give them the victory
Joshua 5:13–15 (NKJV) And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” 14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” 15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
Joshua had been chosen the new leader of Israel after Moses’ death. He was charged with the responsibility of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land and divide up the land to them as their inheritance.
He led the Israelites across the Jordan river where they began to prepare to attack Jericho which was the gateway to the Promised Land.
When Joshua lifted up his eyes he saw (Vs 13) … a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand.
This Man identified Himself as Commander of the army of the Lord (vs 14).
Many theologians, including Martin Luther agree that this was one of the Persons of the Trinity, namely the pre-existent Christ, before He had been born a Man.
Commander – Prince, Captain, Chief, Ruler, General
Verse 15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
This is a very similar account to the appearance of God to Moses at the Burning Bush.
Jesus Christ came to His people to deliver them from slavery
Exodus 3:2–6 (NKJV) And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.” 4 So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” 6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
Exodus 3:7–8 (NKJV) And the Lord said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.
In verse 14 God revealed Himself to Moses as the I AM.
Exodus 3:13–15 (NKJV) Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” 15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’
God is the God of the “PRESENT” and of the “NOW”!
Many Christians see God as the “I WAS” or the “I WILL BE”, but God revealed Himself at the “I AM”.
God always wants to be in our “NOW”, rather than in our “PAST” or in our “FUTURE”.
In John chapter 8 Jesus Christ revealed Himself as the I AM.
John 8:58–59 (NKJV) Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” 59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
By claiming that He was the I AM, Jesus Christ declared that He was the same Person who appeared to Moses in the burning bush.
It is very clear that Christ (pre-incarnate) appeared to both Moses and Joshua.
In the Old Testament He was known by these names:
Ø The Lord (Jehovah)
Ø The Angel of the Lord
Ø The Commander of the Lord’s Army
In the New Testament, He is known as “Jesus Christ” who has been given a name which is above every name.
Acts 4:12 (NKJV) Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
