2. Praying for the Final Outpouring of the Spirit of God
We are on the final countdown towards the Return of Jesus Christ.
We are in the “latter times” when God is pouring out the “latter rain” of His Spirit on the earth, according to His prophecy in Joel 2:28.
Joel 2:28–32 (NKJV) And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 32 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved …
This prophecy in had its initial (and partial) fulfilment on the Day of Pentecost 2000 years ago.
Acts 2:1–4 (NKJV) When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:14–21 (NKJV) … Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 21 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
Peter testified that the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost was in fulfilment of the prophecy in Joel 2:28-32.
Hosea 6:3 (NKJV) Let us know, let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord. His going forth is established as the morning; He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth.
- The Outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost was the former rain
- The Outpourings of the Spirit in these last days are part of the latter rain
- The main purpose of any Outpouring of God’s Spirit is to produce a harvest of souls
Zechariah 10:1 (NKJV) Ask the Lord for rain in the time of the latter rain. The Lord will make flashing clouds; He will give them showers of rain, grass in the field for everyone.
God tells us to “ask Him for the rain (of His Spirit) in the time of the latter rain (of His Spirit)”.
Isaiah 45:8 (NKJV) Rain down, you heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the earth open, let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together. I, the Lord, have created it.
Every Outpouring of the Spirit results in:
- Salvations (souls saved)
- Righteousness being re-established in society
Isaiah the prophet prophesied extensively about God pouring out water on His people. Whilst part of the fulfilment of these prophecies was natural rain falling in dry places, the main fulfilment was God pouring out His Spirit on spiritually dry people.
Isaiah 43:20 (NKJV) The beast of the field will honor Me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen.
- Water in the wilderness (God’s Spirit coming into a messy life to bring order)
- Rivers in the desert (God’s Spirit satisfying a spiritually dry soul)
Isaiah 44:3 (NKJV) For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring;
Hunger and thirst for more of God is the only criteria to qualify for a personal Outpouring of God’s Spirit into our lives.
Isaiah 55:1 (NKJV) Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
The instructions to the thirsty are:
- Come (3 times) Come closer, much closer
- Buy (without money and without price). Let thirst be your currency
- Eat (& drink) Feast on My Presence
John 7:37–39 (NKJV) On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Not all thirst for more of God, but those who do will be satisfied.
Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Revelation 22:17 (AMP) The [Holy] Spirit and the bride (the church, the true Christians) say, Come! And let him who is listening say, Come! And let everyone come who is thirsty [who is painfully conscious of his need of those things by which the soul is refreshed, supported, and strengthened]; and whoever [earnestly] desires to do it, let him come, take, appropriate, and drink the water of Life without cost.
Ephesians 5:18–20 (Msg) Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of him. 19Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. 20 Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ.
