Our VICTORY Journey into
Building a Purpose Driven Church Pt 2
The Foundation for a healthy Church
18th November 2018
REVIEW: I’d like to continue to share some of our VICTORY story ...
I felt God wanted me to revisit WHO we are, WHY we are here, WHERE are we going … so we can celebrate together as a church family and appreciate all God has done … and make a fresh COMMITMENT to GET Involved in the Greatest Cause on Earth ….
Matthew 16:18b ESV Jesus said,
… I will build My church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
There is a BUILDING that has been going on for the past 2000 years …
1 Chronicles 22:5 NASB
… the house that is to be built for the Lord shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore now I will make preparation for it.” So David made ample preparations before his death.
(we looked at … ) What is the Church?
Ephesians 2:19 LB 4 Key Truths:
Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are a member of God's very own family and you belong in God's household with every other Christian.
The church is a family: God made you to be a member of His family and you belong in God’s household.
1 Peter 5:2-5
…shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
God’s people are also called THE FLOCK OF GOD … who need a SHEPHERD …
Matthew 16:18 NIV
Jesus said, . . . I will build my church, and the gates of Hell will not overcome it!
The church has to be built. Jesus is the Builder, but in addition to that God uses people.
EXAMPLE: PAUL ….
1 Corinthians 3:10-14
By the grace of God, I laid a foundation as an expert builder ... But each one should be careful how he builds ... for his work will be shown for what it is. The fire will test the quality of each man’s work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.
This is an incredibly important Verse. It says 4 Things:
- God uses skilled people to BUILD His church “ Paul called himself an EXPERT BUILDER”
This is why we are sharing this with you so together we can be expert builders.
- God is going to TEST every person’s work – What is the TEST?
- The test of your work will be: DOES IT LAST?
Over the past 40 years, Stefan and I have seen a lot of churches that have come and gone. We’ve seen them shoot up ... have pulled a CROWD but are nowhere to be found today.
There is much more to a church than Sunday attendance – a CROWD. There are other factors!
- When God wants to grow a mushroom, He takes 6 hours.
- When He want to grow an Oak tree, He takes 60 years.
What do you want to be? A mushroom? Or an Oak tree?
Growing a HEALTHY church, does not happen overnight. It takes TIME.
Some people are gifted to draw a CROWD overnight, but a CROWD is not a church! A CROWD can be turned into a church. But a CROWD is not a church!
The TEST of our WORK is … DOES IT LAST!
- “Build to last” requires the right foundation
1 Corinthians 3:10
By the grace of God, I laid a foundation as an expert builder.
Having the right foundation is crucial for our lives, for our church, otherwise we won’t LAST!
Example: When someone wants to build a sky scraper
The first 12-18 months is spent digging down … putting pilons deep into the earth. 18 months later they’re back at ground level! All that time they’ve been digging, putting money, effort and still have NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT. But once the FOUNDATION is laid, the structure goes up relatively quickly.
The foundation determines both the size and the strength of a building. You can’t build larger than the foundation can handle. The same is true for churches. A church built on an inadequate foundation will never reach the height that God intends for it to reach.
God wants His Church (you and I) to grow. Growth is the evidence of life.
Growth comes from health – health comes from balance
(If we think about) …
OUR PHYSICAL BODY … it is made up of 12 different systems: we have a digestive system, a skeletal system, a central nervous system, a circularity system, a respiratory system … These twelve systems all work to make our body be effective.
Any time one of these systems gets out of balance that is called dis…eased. We have to bring those systems back into balance. When they come back into balance that is called health and when we’re healthy we can grow. It all comes from your bodies systems.
God is a systematic God
If you look at creation God thinks in systems: solar system, eco system, the plant kingdom is a system, animal kingdom is a system, our physical body.
I want to look NOT at the physical body system, but at the Body of Christ.
There are FIVE ‘Systems’ in the Body of Christ:
one for worship, one for fellowship, one for discipleship, one for ministry, one for evangelism.
The problem: many churches only focus on 1 or 2 or perhaps systems!
In our Journey as pastors …
Stefan and I went to a lot of church conference and seminars:
One conference would say: SMALL GROUPS is the key to a healthy church…
Another would say: EVANGELISM is the key, (we’d go back and focus on evangelism)
Another would teach on MINISTRY is the key to church grow (we’d go back focus on that…. )
Another said it’s all about WORSHIP …. It’s about being SEEKER friendly …
Each of these conference had ‘a’ true, but a partial view of the Body of Christ. The fact is they all matter.
One reason the CHURCH in NZ is ‘stuck’ … has plateaued is because it is out of balance. There is either an over emphasis of one Purpose at the neglect of the others. When we do that we get an imbalanced, and when we are imbalanced we get unhealthy and when we are unhealthy our body stops growing.
Pastors and people run to the NEXT THING … another PROPHECY …
RECENTLY … we were invite to attend a church conference and join a special meeting with pastor from around the country with this famous Guest Speaker. Discussions were had about WHY NZ is not seeing GROWTH … congregations unsettled, pastors frustrated. As Stefan and I listened, some said, we need miracles, others said we are not Discipling people … others said, we need a Move of God, more prophecy … Stefan didn’t say anything …
The truth is …
ALL 5 Purposes are Important
What I am sharing TODAY is … how it all fits together – like the SYSTEMS in our natural body.
We’re talking about HOW to live a PURPOSE DRIVEN life. HOW to have a PURPOSE DRIVEN church.
Q.What Drives our lives? What Drives the Church?
“DRIVE” means “to guide, control the direction”
- When you drive a car – you guide, control the direction of the car down the road.
- When you drive a nail, you guide, control the direction of the nail into the wood.
- Dan Carter – drives, guides, controls the direction of the ball over the goal.
Everybody DRIVEN by something.
- Some people are driven by fear, regret, pain.
- Others are driven by a faith, hope, conviction, purpose…
It is a guiding force, control, conviction behind everything that happens.
The same is true for organisation.
Every church is directed or DRIVEN by something....
- Some are driven by TRADITION …
- Some by PERSONALITIES …
- Others by PROGRAMMES…
- By ACTIVITY – without having a clear Purpose behind them
- Some by SEEKERS … the primary question they ask is: what do the unchurched want?
God’s Purposes for His church include evangelism BUT not to the exclusion of His other Purposes. The church should be seeker sensitive, but not seekers driven! There is only One Person who determines the Purposes of the Church and that is God. We don’t get to choose the Purpose. We choose the style.
Programmes, Personalities, don’t last BUT … God’s 5 New Testament Purposes will last.
(A Biblical Alternative) – How to be a Purpose-Driven church!
The Purpose Driven is NOT!
… about doctrine or denomination
Is not about worship style
It’s not about being contemporary or relevant
It’s not about being “seeker-sensitive”
Being a Purpose Driven Church is based on what Jesus has called His church to do – our mission in the earth.
Lt’s Review …. Last week we looked a 2 verses …
The 5 Purposes of Jesus for His Church
Why we exist as a Church
The mission and Purposes of the Church are found throughout Scripture, but are summarized in Matthew 22 and Matthew 28. These two Statements have 5 verbs. They are the FIVE things God wants you to do with your life. These are the 5 things God wants our church to do in the world.
The Great Commandment
Love the Lord your God with all your heart ... soul ... and mind. this is the first and greatest commandment. and the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. all the law and prophets hang on these two commandments.
The Great Commission
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do everything I have commanded you.
(Ref. Mark 16:15-18)
Love God with all your heart…Worship
Love your neighbour as yourself…Fellowship
Make disciples… teaching them...Discipleship
Baptising them... these signs will follow…Ministry
Go into all the world… preach the Gospel…Evangelism
We call these instructions the 5 New Testament Purposes that Jesus has called the church to fulfill. These are not the 5 options!
What does each of these Purposes means … (let’s read… )
(They are what JESUS wants you to do with your life … )
A definition of the 5 Purposes for Your Life the Church
Worship…planned for God’s pleasure
You are alive today because God chose you to be here. God made you to love you and He wants you to love Him back. You exist for His glory, His purpose, and His delight. Bringing enjoyment to God and living for Him is the first purpose of our life. You bring pleasure to God through worship. Worship is far more than music. Every activity can be transformed into an act of worship when you do it for the praise and pleasure of God.
Fellowship…formed for family
Life is meant to be shared. God intends us to experience ‘life together.’ The Bible calls this fellowship. Fellowship is more than showing up at a church service. It includes unselfish living, sharing, practical serving, sacrificial giving, …all the ‘one anothers’ we read in Scripture.
Discipleship…created to become like Christ
Spiritual growth is about growing to the maturity of Christ. It is growing to the place where we reflect God’s love and lifestyle on earth. It is a life-long commitment that takes focus using God’s Word and the Holy Spirit who changes us from the inside out.
Ministry…shaped to serve God
When we become a Christian, God gives us the hope of eternity with Him. He gives purpose and significance to our lives as we serve and make an eternal difference in our world. When we serve others in Jesus' name, we are ‘ministering.’ God did not design ministry for a few people. He made every member of His family a minister.
Evangelism…made for a mission
We are co-labourers together with Christ. God has empowered us to reach the people in our world. This is the greatest, most significant Cause in history – reaching people for God and changing their eternal destiny. This is why the Church exists.
Fulfilling our Mission requires maintaining balance the 5 Purposes
It is not enough to just define the 5 Purposes. We have to have an intentional Strategy and Structure that balances the 5 Purposes. It is NOT either or.
It is a balance of all 5 New Testament Purposes! (Systems of the body)
Where there is balance there is health and where there is health there is growth, both for the individual believer as well as for the church.
Back to …. Our story…
2005 … after we had done the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign … we contact Rick Warren/Saddleback and said we wanted to embrace the PD Mode for our church. We bought material and made the shift.
Our goal was create an intentional vision, strategy, structure that involved maintaining balance of the 5 Purposes.
Example: We asked Questions, lots of them.
We identified where we were weak and began to create a Strategy to strengthen the weak areas, so we could balance the Purposes into our Church
- We appointed a Leader over each of the 5 Purposes – to champion that Purpose
(Strategy for Evangelism)
We looked at ways to focus our church on ‘Evangelism’ on a weekly basis to help shift our thinking so outreach would become a part of our language, lifestyle: (gentle shifting the flock)
- Personal: Prayer Care Share Cards
- Faith declaration: One new family every week
- Sunday Celebration: we pray for the nation and the unsaved
- Small groups: 4 W’s – each week groups pray and talk about reaching out
- Guest lounge: 7 touch points process to connect people
- Kids Church holds 4 Outreaches a year (training the next generation in evangelism)
- Community groups, and outreaches
(Strategy for Fellowship)
- Small groups: Model 4 W’s (supports 5 Purposes)
- Weekly Reports Pastoral Care, Huddles
- Use the Centric Symbol: it represents the 5 Purposes + 5 PEOPLE Groups + 5 Levels of Commitment. This is KEY – simple, yet powerful to keep us in balance.
5 Levels of Commitment + 5 People Groups + 5 Purposes
The 5 Circles represent: the 5 Purposes + 5 PEOPLE Groups + 5 Levels of Commitment.
We have the Community who have NO commitment, to the Core who are fully committed.
In church life people are not at the same level of commitment. We have people who are CORE, who are super commitment. And we have people who barely show up on Sunday – the CROWD. Between these 2 Groups are different levels of commitment and maturity.
We don’t tell where people are, people tell us their level of Commitment.
5The Community – is everyone in driving distance to us who need God.
4The Crowd – include the unsaved, unchurched who attend our community programmes, special events, and can show up to Sunday Celebration.
3The Congregation – those who are born again, have attended Introducing VICTORY membership afternoon and have committed to make VICTORY their church home.
2The Committed – are members who are committed to the 4 habits for spiritual growth:
Sunday Celebration, small group, working through SGT courses, tithers.
- The Core – are members who are committed to Sunday Celebration, small group, have completed SGT courses, tithers, are serving in a team and are active in evangelism. The Core include our leadership. The mark of physical maturity is reproduction, the same is true spiritually. When a tree mature, when it bears fruit.
Our goal is to have a STRATEGY to reach each People Group to help them grow and move to the centre of the circle by making a spiritual commitments.
We understand that a person doesn’t make a ‘one time commitment’ and then they have arrived!
The Christian life is a journey involving different ‘spiritual’ commitments. Part of our strategy is to help people sort out their COMMITMENTS so they can fulfil God’s plan for their lives.
Example: JESUS USED had this CENTRIC SYMBOL in His ministry on Earth:
(The PD Process works – it balances the 5 Purposes) ….
Our story …
- Assimilate your new members on purpose
- Program around the 5 Purposes / 5 People groups
Implement a programme for each of the 5 Purposes – People Groups – Levels of Commitment.
- Organise small groups on Purpose (4 W’s… + Fellowship)
The main programme for the CONGREGATION is our small group network. FELLOWSHIP, personal care, and a sense of belonging are the benefits of being in a small group. We tell people, “you won’t really feel a part of the VICTORY family until you join a small group.
(The DNA of the body is in every cell of the body! This is revolutionary)
- PURPOSE DRIVEN Courses: Spiritual Growth Track Courses – …. (work on commitment) ….
- Calendar on Purpose
- Budget on Purpose
- Evaluate how we are going with each of the 5 Purposes
- Preach on Purpose (today’s message / 40 Days of Purpose Campaign running March 2019)
In closing … let me ask you … Devotional + Discussion Questions
