Our VICTORY Journey
into a Purpose Driven Church
PV / Sunday 11th Nov 2018
Matthew 16:18b ESV Jesus said,
… I will build My church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
What is the Church?
Ephesians 2:19 LB – 4 Key Truths
Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are a member of God's very own family and you belong in God's household with every other Christian.
The church is also called the ‘flock of God’
1 Peter 5:2-5 …shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Our Mission – Why we exist as a Church
Proverbs 29:18 NASB Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained…
The area of ‘mission’ or ‘why we exist’ is important to both the individual and the local church.
The mission of the Church is based on key Scriptures: These two Statements have 5 verbs. They are the FIVE things God wants you to do with your life. These are the 5 things God wants our church to do in the world.
1. The Great Commandment
Matthew 22:36-40 Love the lord your god with all your heart ... soul ... and mind. this is the first and greatest commandment. and the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. all the law and prophets hang on these two commandments.
2. The Great Commission
Matthew 28:19-20 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, and teaching them to do everything I have commanded you.
Love God with all your heart… Worship
Love your neighbour as yourself… Fellowship
Make disciples… teaching them... Discipleship
Baptising them... these signs will follow… Ministry
Go into all the world… preach the Gospel… Evangelism
We call these The 5 NT Purposes that God has called the church to embrace. They are not the 5 options!
How do we fulfil our Mission?
Create a Strategy that maintains ‘balance’ between the 5 New Testament Purposes. It is NOT either or. It is a balance of all 5 New Testament Purposes! When a church and its members understand and become established in God’s 5 New Testament Purposes there is balance. Where there is balance there is health and where there is health there is growth, both for the individual believer as well as for the church.
Creating balance between the 5 NT Purposes
Using 5 People Groups
5 The Community – is everyone in driving distance to us who need God.
4 The Crowd – include the unsaved, unchurched who attend our community programmes, special events, and can show up to Sunday Celebration.
3 The Congregation – those who are born again, have attended Introducing VICTORY membership afternoon and have committed to make VICTORY their church home.
2 The Committed – are members who are committed to spiritual growth habits: regularly
Sunday Celebration, belong to a small group, are working through our SGT courses.
1. The Core – members who are committed to Sunday Celebration, belong to a small group, have completed our SGT courses, are serving in a ministry or evangelism team, tithers. The Core include our leadership community.
Our goal is to reach each People Group (using the 5 Purposes) and help move them to the centre of the circle through spiritual commitments. We understand that a person doesn’t make a ‘one time commitment’ and then they have arrived! The Christian life is a journey involving different ‘spiritual’ commitments. Part of our strategy is to help people sort out their COMMITMENTS so they can fulfil God’s plan for their lives.
Why do we encourage spiritual commitments? Because we become what we are COMMITTED to.
Many people are half committed to a dozen different things, but if we want to make an impact with our life; if we want our life to count for eternity, we must grow to be fully committed to the Cause of Christ.
Using the 5 Circles, what is your commitment to Christ? How are you investing your life?
1. You can WASTE it. There is countless ways for doing this. Many people do nothing with their lives.
2. You can SPEND it. There are many ways to spend your life. You can give yourself to a career, a hobby, travel – any kind of pursuit that captures you devoting much of your time, energy and resources to it.
3. You can INVEST it. The Bible teaches the best use for our life on earth is to invest it in something that will outlast it!
