- Live Your Calling: “What On Earth Am I Here For”?
Subtitle: THE CALL IS FOR YOU
Today is the 1st Sunday in our 40 Day Campaign: What on Earth am I here for?
We will discuss and discover the answers to life’s most important questions:
- Why am I alive?
- What am I supposed to do with my life?
Romans 8:28 (NIV) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
God’s calling and His purpose go together.
God created a purpose for us, and then He called us into it.
Many people think of the word “call” or called” as a phone call.
But God’s calling for us is not a “phone call” but a “life call”.
Romans 8:30 (NIV) And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
These are all big words that we’ll cover in the weeks ahead.
Today’s focus is on the words: CALLING - CALLED
Called – Gk. KALEO = used over 100 times in NT to describe
God’s purpose...assignment... reason... for our lives
Latin word: vocare - VOCATION- has been weakened to the word “career”
The Bible is filled with stories of people who answered God’s call:
There are 5 Specific Dimensions of God’s Call for your life which we will cover over the next 6 weeks.
Ephesians 1:18 (CEV) My prayer is that light will flood your hearts and that you will understand the hope that was given to you when God chose (called) you. Then you will discover the glorious blessings that will be yours together with all of God’s people.
Today message is an Introduction and Overview of God’s calling for us:
There are 8 THINGS we NEED TO KNOW about OUR LIFE’S CALLING:
1. MY CALLING IS A GIFT FROM GOD
We don’t earn it... We don’t deserve it ... We can’t work for it.
It has been graciously given to us by God as gift.
Galatians 1:6 (NCV) God, by his grace through Christ, called you to become his people …
Grace is God’s undeserved favour and kindness towards us.
Our calling is part of our salvation!
2 Timothy 1:9 (NIV) He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace …
2. I AM CALLED FOR GOD’S PURPOSE
God didn’t make us for ourselves. He made us for Himself!
We exist for HIS plan and purpose, not for our plan.
Example of Jacob & Esau - each had a unique call from God:
Romans 9:11–12 (NCV) But before the two boys were born, God told Rebekah, “The older will serve the younger.” This was before the boys had done anything good or bad. God said this so that the one chosen would be chosen because of God’s own plan. He was chosen because he was the one God wanted to call, not because of anything he did.
Some people connect with God’s call early in life, some later in life.
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV84) For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Workmanship = Gk. poiema - poem, poetry, masterpiece
3. GOD CHOSE MY PURPOSE AND CALLING BEFORE I WAS BORN
Galatians 1:15 (NLT) But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace.
Jeremiah 1:5 (Msg) Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you …
God had holy plans for each of us before we were even born.
Isaiah 44:2a (CEV) I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born. (*** MEMORY VERSE ***)
This teaches us that:
- I’m not an accident … “I am your Creator… ”
- I’m deeply loved … “you were in my care … ”
- God planned my life… “before you were born
4. MY SINS & MISTAKES DON’T CHANGE MY CALL
No actions on our part can change God’s call for our life.
1 Timothy 1:12-13 (NJB) I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By calling me into his service he has judged me trustworthy, 13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, was shown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance.
Paul was a religious terrorist and a persecutor of the highest order.
5. MY CALLING IS PERMANENT
Romans 11:29 (NKJV) For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
Our job may change, but our calling is permanent, and cannot be taken away.
Romans 11:29 (NLT) God's gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.
6. MY CALLING IS CONNECTED TO OTHERS
You cannot fulfill God’s calling by yourself! Calling & Community go together.
Romans 14:7 (NIV84) For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.
Example: None of our body parts work if they are disconnected from the body.
Ephesians 4:25 (GNB) … we are all members together in the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:4 (LB) We are all parts of one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future.
Hebrews 3:1 (GW) Brothers and sisters, you are holy partners in a heavenly calling ...
We’re better together. This shows the value and importance of small groups!
7. GOD EMPOWERS ME TO FULFILL HIS CALLING ON MY LIFE
When God CALLS you, He equips and enables you to do live it out!
I commit to my calling - He commits the strength & power!
Ephesians 4:1 (NCV) … I urge you who have been chosen by God to live up to the life to which God called you.
In the next 6 weeks we will L.E.A.R.N. how to LIVE it!
- Listen to God’s Word every day
- Enlist friends who challenge me (in a Small Group)
- Ask questions and accept correction
- Remember & Reinforce what I learn
- Now DO it
Heb. 5:12 “This time you ought to be teaching others!”
Host a Small group or join a Small Group, but either way, invite a friend to join you.
2 Thessalonians 1:11 (NCV) That is why we always pray for you, asking our God to help you live the kind of life he called you to live. We pray that with his power God will help you do the good things you want and perform the works that come from your faith.
8. THERE’S A PRIZE FOR LIVING OUT MY CALLING
God promises a reward that will last forever.
Philippians 3:14 (NIV) I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
What is the prize? SHARING GOD’S GLORY FOREVER!
1 Thessalonians 2:12 (GNB) We encouraged you, we comforted you, and we kept urging you to live the kind of life that pleases God, who calls you to share in his own Kingdom and glory.
THE FACT IS: GOD IS CALLING YOU. Will you answer his call?
Ephesians 1:17–18 (Msg) … I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, 18 your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers.
